Vasiliki Prestidge joins "Languages are for Everyone", a CIOL x Duolingo event
On Tuesday November 1, the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) hosted Duolingo at the House of Lords Palace of Westminster during a breakfast reception overlooking rainy London and river Thames.
I was beyond honoured to have received an invitation from the Vice President of CIOL, Baroness Jean Coussins to join. I enjoyed the stimulating conversation between Luis von Ahn, Duolingo Founder and CEO, and John Worne, CIOL CEO, along other translators, linguists, and language experts and industry representatives in the audience.
The two CEOs discussed several themes relating to language learning, user behaviour, algorithms, learning patterns, technology and the dynamic intersection
between the two organisations.
The conversation was followed by a Q&A session, moderated by Baroness Coussins.
Among other things, Luis von Ahn shared with us the philosophy and nature of the most downloaded language learning app in the world, the language levels that it covers as well as the Duolingo English Test (DET) which accredits learners and is recognised by many organisations including higher education institutions. The event came to an end with Duolingo and CIOL agreeing on a potential formal partnership in order to advance important themes for languages and linguists.
